At Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, Crunchyroll, Kadokawa Corporation, Qzil.la, and Arch announced Sekiro: No Defeat, an upcoming anime series based on the critically acclaimed action-adventure video game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, developed by FromSoftware and published by Activision. The original game has sold over 10 million copies worldwide, praised for its intense swordplay and evocative world-building.
This new adaptation, fully hand-drawn and deeply faithful to the game's aesthetic and tone, is set in a reimagined, fantastical version of Sengoku-era Japan—a violent age of warlords and warriors, where honor is tested in blood.
The series will stream exclusively on Crunchyroll starting in 2026, with the exception of Japan, China, Korea, Russia, and Belarus.
"Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is renowned for its precision and intensity—qualities we’ve faithfully preserved in this anime adaptation," said Asa Suehira, Chief Content Officer at Crunchyroll. "We’re honored to work with Kadokawa, Qzil.la, and Arch to expand this iconic story through animation and bring Sekiro: No Defeat to fans around the world."
A Visionary Team Behind the Blade
Sekiro: No Defeat is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna, with a script by Takuya Satou (Steins;Gate, Selector Infected WIXOSS). Takahiro Kishida (Haikyu!!, Durarara!!) leads character design. Chief animation direction is handled by Kaito Moki, while action animation is choreographed by Takashi Mukoda. Yuji Kaneko, known for his work on Devilman Crybaby and Mob Psycho 100, oversees art direction.
Production is led by Japanese animation house Arch, with animation by Qzil.la, a rising studio known for visually ambitious projects.
“We are taking on the monumental task of animating Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, a world that is both stunning and punishing,” says director Kenichi Kutsuna. “This adaptation is a labor of love. Our goal is to deliver a visual and emotional experience that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers.”
With its high-caliber team, global streaming reach, and a beloved IP at its core, Sekiro: No Defeat is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated anime releases of 2026.
